Why Arete?

Arete is Greek for “goodness”, “excellence”, or “virtue” of any kind. In its earliest sense, this notion of excellence is bound up with the notion of the
fullfillment of purpose or function, the act of living up to one’s full potential.

Arete (of Cyrene, a world heritage site, and ancient Greek colony in present-day Libya) was a female Socratic philosopher and teacher of the 5th-4th Century B.C., authoress of 40 books, none of which have survived to the present.

In this spirit, I am beginning the new year, striving for the best.  I’ll be recording how it goes throughout this year.
