Went to 4:30PM class, although I really would have preferred to go later,  since I had just finished eating, but there is no 6:30PM class on Saturdays. A woman named Blanca (or Bianca) taught. I heard after class it had been 102 F. The class was perhaps the most crowded I’ve ever seen it. This teacher evidently does not know or does not want to use the fan to cool us off. As a result, to prevent my getting heat stroke, I had to lie down for a lot of the floor poses, which I was not happy about, since I was missing out on their benefits, and, in the standing series, I could only do 1 set of triangle, maybe 1 set of head-to-knee (I can’t even remember so well), and basically just stood, resting till the very last tree (toe stand) pose. On the positive side, I believe my butt actually touched the floor between my hips for the first time ever for the 2nd set of Supta Vajrasana.

  • Brekky: Made blue corn pancakes (2 tbsp. batter/pancake) from milled Isleta Blue Flour Corn which grew from seed at Tierra Vegetables that I gave them last summer!!! The pancakes were delicious, w/ a teensy bit of butter and maple syrup. Had 1/2 guayabana (was like a green, unripe-ish guava, a few banana slices, and a few apple slices + 2 cups coffee w/homemade soymilk.
  • Lunch: At Farm House: Had them scramble the 3 eggs I brought in. Although organic, these were store bought, since none of our hens laid a single egg today!! Also had 2 slices whole wheat toast w/some homemade grapefruit marmalade, a beautiful fruit salad consisting of banana, cantelope, and strawberries, and some coffee w/soymilk. Ate this between 2:15-3PM, maybe a little late for lunch. (However, I woke up pretty late this AM: close to 10).
  • Dinner: Prepared from scratch after getting home from yoga around 7PM.  Something called “Caribbean Stew” from the 2009 Farmers’ Almanac, which won 3rd prize in their “Ethnic Cooking” contest. It was god-awful, I’ll never make it again. Briefly, the ingredients included stewed tomatos, lentils, plantain, onion, celery, carrots, and potato.  I had it over millet. The millet proved unnecessary, though, since there were so many starchy veggies in the stew, namely, the potato and plantain.

  • Brekky: Had to fix my own this AM, since hubby needed to sleep in (he was on-call last night), and I had a 9:45 AM interview. So, had Sonoma Roast coffee (from Taylor Maid) w/homemade soymilk, a few slices of banana, apple, & 2 large strawberries (organic). One slice of home-baked honey-bran bread w/ a little dairy butter (the nut butter I have is way too dry….) + homemade grapefruit marmalade. YUM. (I’ve gone through 1 jar = 8 oz. of grapefruit marmalade in just 4 days!)
  • Lunch: Had to cook at home to save time: 1/2 potato made into hash browns  w/ ketchup, 3 eggs (only 1 yolk) scrambled, w/2 cut-up green onions in some olive oil w/Tabasco sauce, another slice of home-baked honey-bran bread (toasted, this time), with a little butter and grapefruit marmalade, squeezed 1 orange (from our backyard tree) for O.J. Oh, and a cup of coffee w/soymilk.
  • Dinner: Roasted root vegetables from Tierra Vegetables farm stand & from Lola’s (Mexican) Market on Dutton Rd. & Sebastopol Ave. in Santa Rosa (FANTASTIC store): consisting of a little yucca root (this has to be, hands down, THE starchiest root in existence), 1/2 potato, 1/2 yam, 1/2 gigantic carrot, 2 parsnips, 2 Jerusalem artichoke, 1 salsify, 1/2 beet, oh, and tossed in a radicchio left-over from last week’s shopping spree.

Went to 4:30PM class.  Got there quite early (after having dropped hubby off at airport, having gone shopping at local Farm Stand, and walking around a little near Railroad Square, Santa Rosa, CA and finding a new knitting shop!). Some (new) skinny, hippyish looking young guy settled down directly in front of me (a no-no in Bikram’s class), so when we got started, I had to move my mat and towel from my optimum position.  Nevertheless, the class went very well, although I felt it to be quite hot, at times. Endured through it, though. Did especially good 1/2-moon pose and backward bends today, I thought.

  • Brekky: 1 slice home-baked honey-bran bread w/ 1 or 2 tbsp. of peanut butter (avoiding dairy) with homemade grapefruit marmalade (too runny, but delicious–will use pectin next time). Coffee w/home-made soymilk; a little fruit: banana, apple, strawberry.
  • Lunch: Prepared celeriac soup (just saute leeks in olive oil, cut up celeriac into 3/4″ chunks, same w/a couple of small potatos, add water, boil, then simmer till veggies are tender~30 mins., then puree in blender, add salt to taste. YUM). Had some leftover hummus and tabbouleh from last night’s dinner, w/a tortilla.
  • Dinner: Made bean, pasta, and escarole soup (w/pretty white and  tan Sicilian beans  & escarole purchased from Tierra Farm). Had 2 bowls. For second course, had some more leftover hummus, tabbouleh, and a tortilla.

Now that I’ve elminated dairy from my diet for a few weeks, I must say I no longer get bloated after meals, nor do I suffer from indigestion.  My next dietary goal will be to limit my salt intake, to the best of my ability, because I notice dramatic water retention effects after ingesting too much salt.  For instance, after the Indian achar (salty lemon pickle) condiment I consumed last night, this AM my eyes were puffy, and my fingers had swollen to the point where I could not put my wedding rings on!

Went to 4:30PM class today, taught by Jessica.  Must have been an absolute record for attendance at the Santa Rosa studio:  37 people! (I asked after class, 40 may actually be the limit as to how many the studio can accommodate). Despite the heat, due both to the new teacher, and because of the 3.7 kW emitted by the bodies, I actually did all right. Managed to do all the poses, didn’t get out of breath, and felt fairly good! Yeah!!!

  • Brekky: Got to try my homemade grapefruit marmalade (it was delicious, but too runny–decided to try fruit pectin when I make it next time). Had the grapefruit marmalade on a slice of my home-baked Honey-Bran loaf with a little peanut butter (a creative way to avoid dairy, in this case, butter, don’t you think?). Coffee with the last of this batch of soymilk, fruit consisting of a few slices of banana, apple, and strawberry.
  • Lunch: At Farm House in Sebastopol. The hens laid 3 eggs today, so I had 3 “over hard” (didn’t eat most of the yolks, though), another slice and a half of my home-baked honey-bran bread with more grapefruit marmalade, coffee w/non-dairy creamer (I had no soymilk left, need to make another batch–which I just did this evening, it’s cooling even as I’m blogging), salad w/iceberg lettuce, a few tomato and avocado slices, and, yes, ranch dressing (1 or 2 tbsp.)
  • Dinner: Ate out, since I did not have time to do both Bikram Yoga at 4:30PM  AND cook dinner. We went to Sizzling Tandoor, and had: cauliflower & potato, spinach & potato, rice, plain naan, achar, and mango chutney.

Today was great. I guess it was good to have rested a few days, as Dr. Maffetone says. I went to the 4:30PM class taught by the Santa Rosa Bikram Yoga College of India owner, Bill Butcher. The room did not feel too hot, it was not too crowded, I got my favorite spot, and I was eager to go, instead of dreading how I’d feel. Did my best camel pose yet, and leaned further back in the backward bend after 1/2-moon pose than I ever have before. Yeah!
